Corporate greed and the profits over people mentality that exists within sales organizations needs to stop. It’s abundantly clear from the research that this approach is benefiting no one.

This was my takeaway from two new data points (below) that speak to the dire situation surrounding workplace Mental Health. Data continues to pile up that shows things are getting worse, while companies stand idly by watching employees burnout.

We all need to do our part to break this wheel of corporate greed and end the madness.

Data point #1:

Thanks to Gil Cohen for sharing this with me, because according to a Verizon Media White Paper and posted by Forbes:

“93% of managers are finding the Mental Health of their employees is having a negative effect on their bottom line.”

The bigger problem in the report: Less than 1/3 of global managers felt equipped to the Mental Health needs of their teams.

Data point #2:

“A year long Australian population study found full time workers employed by organizations that fail to prioritize their employees’ Mental Health increase their risk of being diagnosed with depression by 300%!”

The study explains that the root cause of this is primarily due to toxic environments and poor management. Lack of recognition, unreasonable demands, providing no autonomy, bullying and lack of support are all cited as management behaviour that erodes the Mental Health and well-being of their team.

I know many of you reading this post and working in sales are probably not surprised by this new data. My challenge to you here is to start advocating for better Mental Health support at your company.

Start by asking yourself the tough questions so you can become a better leader and colleague:

  • Are you doing a good job supporting your own Mental Health?
  • Do you actually know how to support your teams Mental Health?
  • Can you recognize signs of declining Mental Health in others?
  • Do you feel comfortable having vulnerable conversations?
  • How can you use neuroscience and physiology to manage stress?
  • What is stress and how do you use it to your advantage?
  • How do you effectively rest and recharge mid-day and mid quarter?

When did you last read a book, listen to a podcast or take a course about Mental Health?

As a leader and compassionate teammate we have to take responsibility of our own Mental Health. We have to start equipping ourselves with this knowledge if we don’t already have it. We can’t keep waiting for our greedy companies to change, because they have made their position very clear.

Even when they’re losing money…

They still don’t give a sh*t about our Mental Health.
